Trout Fishing in the Cape Winelands with a Split Cane Fly Rod

The streams of the Cape Winelands are among the most beautiful trout waters in the world. Running cold and clear through the valleys around Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl, they offer a style of fishing that rewards patience, observation and a delicate presentation — qualities that suit a split cane fly rod rather well.

The water

Cape streams are typically small and gin clear. The trout — predominantly browns, with rainbows in some waters — are educated and selective. Drag-free drifts matter enormously. The soft action of a split cane rod loads naturally at short range and lays a silk line down with a gentleness that modern graphite rods struggle to match.

The best months are October through April, following the Southern Hemisphere spring. Water temperatures are ideal, fly hatches are reliable and the light in the Winelands valleys in the early morning is something that stays with you.

Fishing with a cane rod in the Cape

A 7'6" or 8' rod for a #4 or #5 line is ideal for most Cape stream fishing. The enclosed valleys and streamside vegetation mean that roll casts and short accurate presentations are the order of the day — exactly the conditions where cane excels.

We have supplied rods to anglers fishing these waters for a number of years and the feedback is consistently that the experience of fishing cane here feels entirely natural. There is something fitting about using a handmade rod in a landscape this old.

Stream & Sea, Paarl

If you are in the Cape and want to see our rods before commissioning, Stream & Sea in Paarl stock a selection of our split cane fly rods and Phoenix silk lines. Their team know these waters intimately and can advise on rod choice for local conditions.

Hand Made Life, Franschhoek

If you are based closer to Franschhoek, our rods are also available through Hand Made Life in the village. Franschhoek sits at the heart of some of the finest trout water in the Western Cape, making it a natural home for a split cane fly rod. The team there share our appreciation for craftsmanship and will be happy to assist with enquiries.

Commissioning a rod

Rods are built to order from our workshop in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, with a current lead time of around three months. Every commission for a 7', 7'6" or 8' rod includes a free handmade leather rod tube and a personalised inscription, hand finished in England. Get in touch via our Contact page to discuss your requirements.
